Auld Lang Syne: a 2020 version

2020, a year that has earned our anger, disappointment, anger, contempt, anger and anger.

In recognition of this canker sore of a year, I have taken the liberty of rewriting the traditional New Year’s Eve celebratory song, Auld Lang Syne, so that you can sing it tonight with authenticity and feeling (original lyrics are below the updated version).

[Not many people know it, but the phrase “auld lang syne” is Scottish for “I’m over this shit.”]

Enjoy, and happy new year friends! May it be happy and safe!

Auld Lang Syne
a 2020 version

Should this shite year be forgot,

and never brought to mind?

You’re [insert preferred two-syllable curse word] right it be forgot,

and auld lang syne!

Chorus:

For auld lang syne, my dear,

for f*cking auld lang syne,

we've took a beating this damn year,

You can shove yer auld lang syne.

From hurricanes and wildfires,

and hornets murderin’;

This year has been a dumpster fire,

for auld lang syne.

Repeat chorus

The lucky worked from home all year,

from morning sun till nine;

With kids screaming through Zoom meetings,

for auld lang syne.

Repeat chorus

If this damn year lasts one more day,

I might just lose my mind!

And move into a rubber room,

for auld lang syne.

Repeat chorus

If Trump should call, I’ll take a pass

I’d rather eat fork tynes!

And COVID can just KISS MY ASS!

for auld lang syne.

Original version:

Should old acquaintance be forgot,

and never brought to mind?

Should old acquaintance be forgot,

and auld lang syne?

Chorus:

For auld lang syne, my dear,

for auld lang syne,

we'll take a cup of kindness yet,

for auld lang syne.

And surely you'll buy your pint cup!

and surely I'll buy mine!

And we'll take a cup o' kindness yet,

for auld lang syne.

Chorus

We two have run about the hills,

and picked the daisies fine;

But we've wandered many a weary foot,

since auld lang syne.

Chorus

We two have paddled in the stream,

from morning sun till dine;

But seas between us broad have roared

since auld lang syne.

Chorus

And there's a hand my trusty friend!

And give me a hand o' thine!

And we'll take a right good-will draught,

for auld lang syne.
