It’s earlier than you think

An excerpt from my latest humor column in the Chesterfield Observer:

Today is June 13, meaning that summer might as well be over.

Oh, sure, the kids will be in school for a few more days, watching videos and playing board games and doing all the other things they do once the SOLs are finished.

And, yes, technically summer actually doesn’t even begin until June 21, or June 22, or June 20. Whatever. Really, the date summer starts is irrelevant, because it’s essentially over before it begins.

In about the time it takes to read this column, July 4 will have come and gone, with anticlimactic neighborhood fireworks and the unsettling realization that a holiday that used to occur in the middle of summer now seems to kick the season off.

It’s not literally true, but it sure feels that way. The question is why, and what do we do about it? Well, I have some ideas, and they are in my latest humor column in the Chesterfield Observer. Click here to read the entire column.
